I was hoping I’d find this comment! This take is completely spot on. It’s also why socialism inevitably tries to trap people from leaving (think East Berlin, Cuba, China, NoKo etc). Socialism simply is not competitive with capitalism. If people see a land where they aren’t taxed to death and have individual rights, tons of them are likely going to want to flee to that promised land. It’s that savior Pepe meme lol. It’s why socialist governments have always either tried to expand globally so there’s simply no place to escape their control (global socialism, today’s main flavor) or become completely self sufficient, isolated, and no freedom of movement (autarkey, and the historical term known as “socialism in one country” — LOOK THAT SHIT UP! — that effectively makes the country the citizens’ entire “world”). The existence of exit taxes and the effectively inevitable increasing of said exit taxes (NJ and I’m sure some others) is a sure fire way to know you live in a jurisdiction where the leaders have socialist ideological roots.
