It would be interesting to contrast this against their bereavement policy. I bet they don't do this for you if a family member had passed away.

edit: I just recalled that my grandma died suddenly when I was in third grade. My mom told me in the morning before school, and I still had to go to school that day. Just an example of how we were taught to survive and thrive. Ain't always easy.
