I would agree with some of that -- but not all.

You can't raise a daughter to be totally dependent on men. What happens if she marries, has three children, and her husband dies without life insurance? Or if she marries a man who beats her, or is a womanizer-- should she remain stuck in the marriage because she can't afford to support herself?

I am against the welfare state. I am also against women feeling pressured to marry as soon as they can, to the best provider they can get, purely for economic reasons. The best way to stop that craziness is to make sure women are well educated and able to care for themselves, if need be.

That doesn't necessarily lead to rabid feminism and leftism. A woman can be 100% a girly girl and still have a STEM career or a head for business.

I was extremely lucky to have hit the marital jackpot. I really only had my looks and a second rate education to fall back on. I didn't come from wealth or social background and learned quickly exactly what I was worth on the marriage market. I often wonder what would have happened to me had I not met my husband because women in my day were raised to be homemakers.

I don't think you can adequately appreciate the anxiety a woman feels when every date is a life and death situation because her future survival depends on getting a husband. That is no way to live.

That was the main reason I made sure my own daughter received the education my parents felt a woman didn't "need". No matter what happens, she will always be able to find a job, and support herself. And the horrible anxiety of worrying about the future isn't a problem for her, as it was for me.

Someday when you have a daughter of your own -- you'll want her to have a say in her own future. You might not think so now -- but you will when the time comes.
