If you read Aristotle's "Politics," a democracy is what we today call a socialist state. ("Socialist" didn't exist at the time 2,500 years ago.) But Aristotle says that, in a time of democracy, demagogues would rise up and bribe their way to power by attacking the rich and promising the proceeds to the poor. Such politicians would promise free food, free housing, free healthcare. He also mentioned the first socialist,.Phaleas of Chalcedon who apportioned all land equally in his city-state. (This went south, however, when population increases caused him to have to obtain new land . . . which forced him to go to war with neighboring city-states to steal land for his people. So he was constantly at war.)

When the Founding Fathers in the U.S. denounced "democracy," they were denouncing socialism, because they were given a classical education. Aristotle's version of "democracy" is what they understood democracy to be. (The term socialism was coined by the French writer Henri de Saint-Simon, around 1820. The French Revolution that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams renounced started in 1789. So the very word "socialist" didn't exist.) Nevertheless, the French Revolution was a socialist revolution, and the Founding Fathers in America denounced it. The very first statue the Bolsheviks put up in Russia was a statue to French leader of the Reign of Terror Maximilien Robespierre. Lenin said that Robespierre's people (the Jacobins) had been proto-Bolsheviks.

THIS is why "democracy" is being promoted so hard by the left. Spoiler, the term "democracy" does not appear in the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution or any of the 50 separate state constitutions. Rather, they use the word "republic".

Aristotle says that there are three classical forms of government: 1) Monarchy, 2) Aristocracy and 3) Republic. These three (he says) have corrupted decayed forms: 1) Tyranny, 2) Oligarchy and 3) Democracy.

He says that all forms of government have a different end-goal. An oligarchy's end-goal is to transfer the wealth of the many to the few. The end-goal of a republic is "the promotion of virtue among its people". While the end-goal of a democracy is "equality".

Notice how the radical left is always ranting about "equality"? (They never promote "the virtue of the people".) Plato, in "The Republic," says that, in a democracy, "equality" becomes a perverted fetish. They will equalize vice with virtue (he writes), they will equalize the citizen with the foreigner, they will equalize perversion with wholesomeness.
