Dorothy Sayers is my all-time favorite - I named my firstborn Harriet, after Harriet Vane! :)
Josephine Tey is also quite good in the cozy 20th century Brit vein. Not very many novels to choose from, but The Franchise Affair and Brat Farrar are two of my favorite mysteries, period. I think she was a closet conservative (and Sayers was openly conservative).
