China's fast-track into the WTO was pushed by Clinton and sealed by Bush under President Jiang Zemin, During 1998-2001 everyone had a clear and at times contentious view on the steps China was expected to take in order to bring its government more into sync with the norms and expectations of other WTO nations.

But China's human rights issues got a pass when Beijing 'matched' US taxpayer dollars funding the Afghanistan/Iraq war by acquiring US Treasury Bonds in the amount of $464 billion. As this quick cash funded wars, under Most Favored Nation status US Manufacturing was effectively being outsourced to China permitting them to build a world-class industrial society in record time, as ours was shuttered.

Modern China is fantastic to behold and they should be rightfully proud of this achievement! But it has come at our expense in ways that should have been more obvious at the time.
