If you're familiar with how leftism works (via large, urban areas ripe for the collectivization of its huge, easily regimented herds), it shouldn't surprise you at all. A view of any electoral map by county would've shown you that, at least for the last 80 years, the big cities have been deep blue. In other words, cities and leftism are strongly linked.

The only difference between then and now is that the urban left has a president whom they despise and their leadership is radicalized to the point of willingness to destroy their own cityscapes in a paroxysm of 'tantrum vandalism' so as to hurt Trump and the conservative public. They know that the wanton destruction grieves us to see it.
