They were ugly, including junk like that modern string "soft sculpture" wall art in the lobby. But I loved them. In college I would walk down there at night with friends after a few drinks and hang out in the plaza. I liked to lie on my back on the concrete benches between them with them framing the sky, grooving on their hugeness. Sometimes if the fountain was off we would take off our shoes and sock skate on the cool marble under the big gold globe until the guards came and gave us a talking to. When I lived in Chinatown I liked to go over there after work and watch the sunset from the top, sit in the wind and read on the days they let you go outside. At one point I was there so often I was on a first name basis with the guys who took the tickets and sometimes they let me up without one. On a clear day you could pretend to hold the Statue of Liberty in your hand. They were ugly but majestic and I love massive scale things that men build, like those buildings, bridges, aircraft carriers, etc. We should have rebuilt them just for the huge fuck you that would have been.
