America had factories which were able to be converted quickly. Who has the factories now? NOT America.
Remember the publicity stunt mobilization of auto manufacturers to produce ventilators? I do, but I don't recall seeing any mention of numbers actually produced. Besides the grandiose claims with no substance of 100,000 ventilators by year end. Very 1984-esque. It's next to impossible for me to simply Google how many were made and or distributed.
As well as the idea, treating covid like ARDS and venting patients was actually contributing to their deteriorating conditions.
Govt awarded GM nearly $500 million for 30 thousand vents by August. Have they been delivered? Edit: apparently yes, but it wasn't an easy find.
