Keto without exaggeration may have saved my life.
In my mid 20s, without my knowing I developed a glucose allergy, and more or less had severe flu like symptoms 2 weeks of the month, and cold symptoms the other 2. I was almost perpetually sick - vomiting, coughing, shitting every 10 minutes, spitting up mucus, sniffling / runny nose, sweating - I often was struggling to breath which made physical activity very difficult.
This went on for YEARS. In my mind I thought I had AIDS or something, how could someone just be sick almost 24/7. This all came on when I got out of the military, so I was in the best shape of my life, lean, muscular, 6 pack abs, and an awesome long distance runner, which was even more or a shock to me.
I got screened at the VA for various cancers and diseases (Crohn's, Celiac) infections, viruses and parasites. I thought maybe had I been exposed to something bad in Iraq, or maybe just being downwind and choking on the burn / shit pits for hours at a time. Did everything under the sun to figure it out and the VA just said they didn't know.
Fast forward a couple years, Rogans on Keto saying how much he enjoys it, my fat buddy gets inspired by Rogan, gets on board loses weight like crazy. My sister goes low carb and loses over 100lb is under a year. At this point, being a college student who essentially cant exercise - I've put on some weight so I decided to give it a whirl for the weight loss properties alone.
I too start losing weight, looking good feeling good - and about a month in I realize "I've had no symptoms since I started dieting". That's unheard of. I might have a good week now and then, but 4 in a row? Impossible.
After 3 months on the diet and already crushing my goal weight I fell off the wagon thinking "well I could have carbs 1 day a week" which slowly turns into "the weekend" then "the weekend and Friday" until I'm not dieting at all. Symptoms come back with a vengeance. Hunch confirmed.
Eventually after some self testing on my part, getting on keto, off keto, half assing keto it became pretty clear that my body didn't like carbs any more.
I could predictably go get a McDonalds breakfast, slam down an Energy drink or two, and in under an hour I'm going to be sick as a dog.
Spoke with the VA, 3 separate doctors said that any of the tests they can do are inconclusive and inaccurate at best and don't lend themselves to any concrete proof, and that the best option was trying to figure it out with a food journal (which I more or less had been doing before that). All 3 of the Docs however agreed with my hypothesis - and one of the Doc's was Keto herself.
That was about 2 years ago that I had this revelation, now as long as I stay in Ketosis 95% of the time I feel great, I literally got my life back, I can jog, lift weights ride my bike etc - I've lost weight and feel amazing. On Holidays I usually just say fuck it eat what I want and am usually ok. If I have multiple meals in a row I'll have some symptoms, and if I go like 2-3 days with a regular diet I will essentially have the flu - so not worth it, and needing some regulation there.
Either way, the diet is 10/10, literally saved my life - I"m the last person in the world to endorse some "snake oil" or "miracle diet" bullshit but for everyone I've known that has done it, has made them lose weight and feel better. Highly recommended.
