For everyone who's ever wondered how in the world German citizens could just "sit idly by" while Hitler did his thing...
Here's your example right here.
It's easy for everyone to "say" they would have "done the right thing" and "resisted" or whatever, but unfortunately, that's not how the VAST VAST VAST majority of people work. History has shown this repeatedly.
And I'm just as much talking to myself with this too. Because this is one of those things, like feeling compelled to rush into a burning fire to save strangers, that each person does not know which way he/she'll go until he/she is the one thrust into the situation on a moment's notice.
"Well, I would have taken my mask off and made a scene with that guy!"
Would you, now? Who'd you call if they actually put you in jail? Who'd put dinner on the table that night? Who'd drive your car home for you? Who'd show up to work the next day in your place? Who'd you hire as a lawyer and how the hell would you pay for all that? etc etc
"Bah, the cops wouldn't have gone that far..."
Maybe. Maybe not. You don't know. And that's what makes MOST people sit on the sidelines. Because while they may feel they would do it for themselves, they would NOT do it for their family and loved ones. "Well, I would, except I want to be around for my girls, they've got a recital tomorrow night and I promised I'd be there..." etc.
And yet, with that said...
This country was FOUNDED by the 1-2% of people who ACT. Deliberately and willfully, knowing full well the dangers and risks that are at stake (and even willing to face the many "unknowns" in play, like the above). Our country has gone from THAT to THIS in such a very short time.
God help us. And God please protect Tump and his inner circle. May they be cut from that same cloth if and when their time comes.
EDIT: A very compelling book I read not too long ago that got me interested in this topic again was
Ordinary Men
that goes in detail about the psychological ins and outs surrounding the creation and maintenance of polish death squads. A real eye-opener in so many ways, though so very tragic and haunting.
EDIT2: Just found an audio reading in case some prefer that format
