The land might be cheap in some areas, but housing and heating costs in Alaska are terrible. It was ranked one of the worst to retire in a few years back due to cost of living. (Like my 230k ranch on an acre, $300 electricity bill, etc.)
The soys tend to move here to ‘live the dream’ and then hate the extreme weather and darkness. Most tend to move back out within 3-5 years in my experience. Anchorage is a bit worse off because they are more temperate in the winter, only getting down to around 0 degrees F on average compared to the interior where it averages -30 in the deep winter and dips to -50. Anyone else cucked here is teachers union, local gov, or University system related.
