Not sure where you're getting that they were woken up by gunfire, the police actually knocked first which is why Breonna was in the hallway with her boyfriend.
The above is a pretty eye opening read. Honestly, they did everything right from my perspective. Shitty situation, and especially sad that Breonna literally said she couldn't sleep because she was concerned about police at one point. She clearly knew the risks involved, though sadly the person she said that to claims he wouldn't have shot himself and the shooter was an idiot who got her killed.
