in essence, you are right that IS what they are doing in effect (without coming out and saying it), but note that its only attainable in practice if the entire state government apparatus (all 3 branches) is on the same team.

In an actual competitive party system, no party would be able to get away with that, if the governor attempted it, the legislature would impeach. If the legislature attempted it, the state supreme court would rule it unconstitutional.

This is why having a de facto 1 party system is such a horrible outcome for the citizenry. Each branch, instead of being a check and balance in favor of the citizens and the state constitution, instead reinforces each others SUBVERSION of the state constitution.

That is what is happening here. You have essentially the single party states FORCING the states electors to the federal electoral college to be of their choosing, what the people want be damned. The votes are irrelevant because only the votes that the state party wants will be counted.

And there is no one to stop it, save the #SCOTUS. Or maybe state citizenry with pitchforks and torches.

The good news is that these states who are de-facto single party states are really only just CA and NY for now (IIRC). NV is close. But remember, to have that full chokehold you have to fully own all 3 branches. Lots of states with leftist governors have conservative legislatures (thank god)
