Bit of a tangent here, but the idea that DOJ/FBI should an apolitical unit "independent" of government is a modern myth. The same myth that made us believe that mainstream media was fair and unbiased, rather than Deep State propaganda. We're humans. It's impossible to be completely unbiased. The founding fathers knew this when they set up the three branches of government. The FBI should be 100% under the control of the executive. It's the only way to keep the people in charge of the government. Elections have consequences.
No, we don't want the president interfering with and shutting down legitimate investigations - but it's in his constitutional authority to do so, and he absolutely should be leading and prioritizing their work. (though the actual investigations start at the bottom and go up, the director can certainly request something be investigated)
There is no "firewall" between the president and the FBI.
Ironically, John Yoo - one of W's lawyers - is one person who has tried to fight against the independent agency myth. He hasn't touched the DS stuff but he has mentioned the permanent beauracracy. Congress creating agencies with broad independence is unconstitutional. We can apply this to the CIA too.
