Think about Socrates, the story of his trial is him articulating how he believes in the gods, but strictly only beliefs that there are the god's spirits acting on Earth. They executed him for being an atheist, even though he was telling them directly that no, he isn't and what made him believe in the divinity of the gods. The majority of the senate honestly couldn't comprehend what he was articulating being true-- until Plato fully explained it.
