Socialism is when the State controls industry. The individual is technically free, but practically speaking they can't actually do anything worthwhile without government approval.

Ok, so you are generally wrong here, but mostly cause I think you do not understand the meanings of the words you are using.

The Nazis were a statist left-wing totalitarian regime - the demands or party platform of the Nazi's in 1938 are the exact same, with no difference whatsoever from the Democrat platform that elected FDR, no difference whatso ever.

The defining characteristic of the left is a controlled economy by a select few, and few if any basic human rights - humans are only allowed to work and make more workers (unless you are part of the ruling-class.)

The right and right-wing policies are akin to be a hippie commune, where every capable adult is the government, and all goods and the result of work are held in common, which is where the word commune comes from.

Just because you were taught that USSR was right-wing doesn't make it so- it was a version of Nazism, but just not as a total agrarian economy as Russia was at the time.

The USSR was a totalitarian regime, same as Nazi Germany, just differing on things like religion and personal dogma of Hitler. Socialism would be a right-wing economic model, but has never been tried anywhere, since people will by their very nature try to game the system.
