I first started with KJV but it is in "the kings English" so to speak so it can be hard to understand sometimes. So for me personally I've been spending a lot of time the last few days looking at different translations and the best I can seem to come up with is to read as many translations as you can because some are better than others and worse In their own ways.
So since I own a cheap KJV bible, I'm going to buy an ESV NKJV and maybe a NASB. I like to read books more than read on my phone, but the bible app has the vast majority of translations so you can really dig in and see what the differences are. I couldn't really say which translation is better or worse, the best information I can find is that they're all the word of God, so it doesn't hurt to read them all if you really want. You don't have to though. Its really all about accepting jesus, repenting and then preaching the good news to all the creatures than it is about which book you read.
I think different translations go from more "word for word" to more "thought for thought" so if you're debating with someone, a more word for word translation might be whats best. It really depends. The more I look into bibles the more I want so I dont really have a favorite. They're all my favorite tbh.
Edit: to be clear I haven't read even the kjv all the way through yet so I actually have no idea which, if any versions are infiltrated with propaganda. Although maybe some are more prone than others. If youre worried about that, a more word for word translation is what youre gonna want from what my research the last few days has told me. A kjv would work. Ive heard that the new American standard version NASB, was translated in 1995 or something like that and hasn't been revised since. So that might be a good read too and I bet its got more modern English as well. If I find any Marxism or propaganda I will be sure to point it out to everyone I can
