Equality in all things was never even the point to begin with. Equality under the law is the point, so that the government does not impose unjust burdens on people. Individual people are, for the most part, very reasonable and easy to deal with. It's only when people start making organizations that supersede the individual that corruption starts becoming a serious issue.
