The point is Sharpies should not have been allowed. They were not allowed the previous year because the machines couldn't read them effectively, and they did not upgrade the machines. Yet for some reason they were allowed this year, which ended up causing some issues.
Edit: Also I checked the firmware versions, since theoretically they could have updated the firmware to allow new features, even though it's the same hardware. Nope, same exact firmware version in both 2019, and 2020, in Maricopa county.
