Well yeah it’s still a medically useful drug when administered by professionals who know what they’re doing. My lung collapsed 10 years ago and they gave me Fentanyl and Ativan so they could cut a hole in my chest cavity and stick a tube in there to vent the air that was leaking out of a hole in my lung. While I was still awake. I didn’t give a damn and only felt a little bit of pressure.

Basically...it’s fucking strong shit. (Later on I was begging for more as the pain started to kick in, and they were like “NAH.” - worst pain I’ve ever felt at that point but I’m sure they had no choice.)

The morphine drip they gave me for a subsequent surgery was what really fucked me up. Many nights of waking up drenched in sweat, one time having accidentally ripped out my IV, crazy and terrifying dreams for a week or so after I got home, and all sorts of sexual issues like erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. My body was all jacked up for a while after that hospital stay.
