I've seen some discussion that it wasn't as much of a larp as many colonists were actually adopting the garb of the natives. Cross-cultural exchange has always been a thing. Why wouldn't you adopt the best (or even simply interesting) things from other cultures?

“The French, English, Germans, Dutch, and other Europeans, who have lived for several years in distant provinces, near and among the Indians, grow so like them in their behavior and thought that they can only be distinguished by the difference of their color.”
