They wanted to see how people would act, with nothing more than the idea of a role guiding them.

Suffice to say, those who played the guard role spiraled out of control into abuse -- because the whole idea of the experiment, was to highlight in-group versus out-group behavior, and how the in-group will ultimately rationalize near any behavior against the out-group, simply because they are perceived as the out-group and without power.

We see real world examples of it all the time, and to this day.
