The "end" is the fantasy of a utopia where everybody gets free stuff--appealing to people's worst instincts. The "means" = violence. The Left claims this is a necessary evil to reach the Utopian goal. (Soros: "What I'm doing is both amoral and moral at the same time.")

Then the violent, amoral means that got you into power prove so effective when it comes to holding on to power, the revolutionaries shrug, Why not use violence and repression as the normal way of doing political business? That's their real goal: Utopia for the power-hungry elite, Dystopia for the powerless masses.

Ultimately, "power is not a means, it is an end." Orwell adds: "One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard the revolution, one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship." 1984
