I'd go for something like this for home defense. Don't want to be swinging a long barrel around. And a pump needs practice to get used to. Some people, a lot of practice.

Pistol backup I'd go .45. Big grip spreads the recoil on your hand. Stopping power. As someone else suggested, go to a gun store range and rent a few to try. If the pistol does not fit your hand or feel comfortable, do not get it, no matter how popular people say it is. Go for the largest caliber that feels good.
