So I recently took on a job for a government contractor that's staffing for a shelter in Texas. I was under the impression that I'd be doing medical recruiting but got dragged into this project. I was not too pleased about it but I looked at it as a learning experience about what's going on at the border.
Eventually the company was asking for volunteers to go to assist in the onboarding of the staff. I jumped on it quickly and volunteered because I wanted to see with my own eyes the conditions at the facility and the situation on the border. I went to a town in the middle of nowhere in West Texas oil country.
The facility pretty much looks like a military bunker. It was rather understaffed. You're not even allowed to bring phones onto the facility. The children come in busloads. They separate the Covid positive ones from the others. Some of them come with lice, scabies, etc and have to be quarantined. They have to go through a medical triage tent to get checked out for multiple diseases.
They stay there for 30 days until the government can find sponsors. If they hit 18 they get removed and processed with the adults. They will eventually have their asylum cases pleaded. Many of them will be sent back.
I speak fluent Spanish so I had a conversation with one of the kids I was escorting. He was 17 y/o boy from Honduras. He told me he decided to come to the US and his parents supported him. He said he rode taxies through Mexico and then crossed the Rio Grande. Told me he had family in New Jersey. I was flabbergasted that the parents would even allow their kid to disappear like that not knowing where he is...
I get dragged for even working this job but I was unemployed for ages and had to make a choice. I'm looking for other jobs cause I don't even like the job. If it hadn't been me it would've been someone else doing it. And I pretty much pull a Ron Swanson and do the required minimum anyway. Would you rather someone dedicated do the job? I'm an immigration hawk as much as any of you but it doesn't mean we can't be pragmatic and have some compassion before we deport them.
After this I would like to join the Ron DeSantis re-election/presidential campaign where I want to make my next moves. Thanks for listening!
