I get sick of teaching people that america did well against the china virus so i made a copy paste that covers the central points with sources. use it as you see fit
Before we compare nation’s pandemic response let’s remember they don’t start on equal playing field, its very easy to prevent a pandemic on an island and not every country got the same strain of the virus (the Asian strain of the virus is far less contagious than the European strain, America got the European strain) https://www.cato.org/blog/two-supertypes-coronavirus-east-asian-european. So obviously per capita all Asian countries should appear lower (until they inevitably get the European strain)
We must also remember America is the global center of all air traffic. So America will always get any pandemic second and it will seed America more heavily than other locations.
Adjusted for population size America’s deaths per capita are on the lower side for an industrial western nation also remember that asian countries got a far less contagious strain of the virus and they are essentially dealing with a separate pandemic https://www.statista.com/statistics/1104709/coronavirus-deaths-worldwide-per-million-inhabitants/
Remember American states are each responsible for their own emergency response in America, the federal government does not interfere unless asked and even then only to provide resources. As you can see from this tracker all the highest deaths are in blue states, adjusted for population size its even worse https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
If you actually look at the deaths per capita by state there are only 3 states in the country that have a 3 digit death rate per 100k people https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/covid-19-cases-and-deaths-per-state-in-the-us.html in other words only a few states in the whole nation did badly
America is #1 in the world for testing https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/full-list-total-tests-for-covid-19
America has one of the lowest mortality rates from the virus, keep in mind this is CONFIRMED cases so its actually lower in real numbers because poor countries like india can’t afford to confirm their true volume of cases https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&time=2020-03-14..&country=OWID_WRL~USA~ITA~BRA~ESP~SWE~DEU~IND~IRN&cfrMetric=true&totalFreq=true&aligned=true&hideControls=true&smoothing=0&pickerMetric=location&pickerSort=asc
Our testing sites in new York receive 5,000 people a day but are capable of testing 15,000 per day. so we don’t need more testing https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/new-yorkers-need-to-get-tested-cuomo-says-700-statewide-sites-test-for-covid-19/2420689/
so while case numbers continue to rise rapidly they are now all young healthy people who are just getting tested. hospitalization rates are not going up (hospitals are still doing elective surgeries in supposedly at risk areas and they would stop if they needed to) and death rates are not spiking, they are dropping. https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/jul/6/coronavirus-death-rate-drops-even-cases-spike/
