One of my father's (PhD) main gripes with the university system, starting in the 1970s, was that once someone made into a PhD program, it was pretty much impossible to flunk out, and this was causing great harm to science. In his days in grad school, about half of PhD candidates never made it because their thesis was rejected.
When I got my PhD and started teaching, one of the first things I noticed was the complete and utter shite that passed for most Masters' and Doctoral theses. Then I made it a point to read all my coworkers theses. No wonder I felt like I was surrounded by idiots. I was.

This is why you get so many airliner crashes in third world countries. They do not have a reservoir of experienced pilots of ANY kind, let alone pilots with experience flying anything close to a passenger jet. They take people who have never flown a plane before, put them through training, and make them co-pilots. After just a few hundred hours flight time, they're captaining passenger Jets. The two pilots who crashed those 737s a couple years back? Neither one had more than 1000 hours flight time. iirc, one had only 300 hours.

The Portland Black Mafia no longer exists, it's street gangs now, and they keep relatively quiet. I met the daughter of Portland's Black Godfather a few years back. He'd been dead for decades, but I made sure I was extremely polite and respectful to her. When she found out I was in real estate she said "My father was in real estate." I smiled politely, said "how interesting," and changed the subject.
That type of person is exactly who is drawn to public facing positions (media, politics). They seek the validation they never got in high school. It's all about propping up their fragile egos, and feeding their neuroses.
