old microwaves can be used as faraday cages, but they aren't exactly made for that so don't expect them to preform like a real one.
if you read the comments on that link i posted there's quite a few people talking about exactly that... a few suggestions of DIY solutions that work better, and one guy even gives a breakdown of the limitations of microwaves for this purpose.
that being said... if you see a microwave on the side of the road... it might save your walkie setup or your rechargeable flashlights, or an old cell phone, or a backup circuit board from your new ATV... might save them from an EMP depending on the distance, what it came from, the strength of it, etc...
it should work even if they aren't plugged in, some people think you need to have them grounded but it's not necessary for shielding, only for dissipation of the EMP that might be energizing the microwaves faraday cage that keeps you safe from getting cooked while you cook your popcorn.
