Im sorry that was your experience with the healthcare system. I dont know when your mother got covid but there was a lot of fear in the beginning. Dr offices atill dont have you come in and prefer sending out homehealth and doing telemed visits. You dont come off as pompous. It shows a sample of the publics opinion
I understand that what we do is not well understood I wish it were and we try and will keep trying but its hard to erase the images the media create for us, like nurse jackie or House MD. I also get your frustration, the truth of the matter is we dont know. This virus is too new and HCQ, Ive given it to patients for covid but after my shift i may never see that patient again to see the outcome. Thats why research takes its own field. Someones gotta follow the patients from beginning to end and accout all other variables.
This takes research and well devolped studies and time. Nurses at the bedside are not doing research. We may be involved in it but we do not assess the the outcomes of a certain cohort that received x drug vs those tnat recieve y or develop the programs. We put out fires all day and thats all we have time to do.we incorporate the findings of studies performed by others into our practice if they are evidence based. There are nurse researchers and doctors but that may as well be an entirely different field.
I am a nurse switched from icu to homehealth in the last few months. They aren't terrified of the virus, i still see covid patients afterall. There are just so many patients and not enough nurses. This was true even before covid but covid has pushed it over the edge. One of my last deciding factors to leave was when i had a unstable patient that wenr from having 1 vasopressor to all 5 on my shift meaning all day they progressively deteriorated to the point we started bedside dialysis. Should definitely have been my only patient but no i was also recovering a vascular surgery across the hall who should have also been a 1:1. The first patient ended up dying after my shift. These werent covid patients by the way. People do get real sick with covid there is no denying that but theres no way of telling who will get real sick and no reason to shut down the economy. Its really disheartening to hear this opinion. We are the most exposed to the illness, actively putting our mental health and physical safety on the line under normal circumstances let alone the added pressure of accommodating a large influx of sick covid patients during flu season which has always been brutal anyhow. Dont get me wrong i hate the hero BS the media peddles but damn to be told we are a let down... thats just the way it goes i suppose.

**I often change gloves multiple times in the same pt room wahing my hands in between each pair. Also gloves are always comsidered dirty. If i put on a fresh pair and am caught wearing them in the hall, the hospital can be fined 10k for cross contamination. Not to mention gloves make your hands a warmer more moist environment, increasing bacterial growth rate. The glove peopl ar by far the most clueless, grabbimg handles then reaching into their purse and touching thier face all with the same stagnant pair. You have to be more vigilant with gloves yet people get a falso sense of security from them
Problem is masks are considered dirty so you should wash your hands anytime you touch it, therefore, this is a ridiculous idea.
