Looks a little bit like a noctilucent cloud. High altitude ice crystals are just like contrails. It's illuminated at 40,000 ft or so, maybe higher, while the clouds near ground make it look overcast. If it's headed west or southwest toward the setting sun, it's still illuminated by the sun, and the line to its rear is just the plane's shadow. It's not really moving that fast compared to the ground since it's probably 50 or 75 miles away, the way a fireball would.
After 9-11 when flights resumed, I watched the eastern horizon and saw contrails clustered around NY, Boston, etc that were easily 300 miles away on the unobstructed horizon.
