Nice! I cook a lot too and love swapping recipes/ideas/tips. What I do for my pears is peel, quarter and core them. Then simmer them in enough poaching liquid to cover them until I can easily stick a fork in them. At the beggining I add sugar (maybe 2/3 C if using a whole bottle of wine), pinch of salt, vanilla (2 tsp or so and preferably vanilla bean paste), a couple cardomom pods, cinnamon stick, black peppercorns, whole clove and star anis to the wine. My favorite wine for this is boxed chardonnay. The leftover liquid makes an incredible carmel when cooked down that makes the perfect sauce to serve with the pears.

I've been going out of my way to avoid 14 mile because my car is low to the ground. At what point should the city/county/state take responsibility for car repairs due to damage from the roads?
