With regards to evil totalitarian planned economies, I consider all of the Axis powers from WWII, North Korea, Cuba, and the Soviets to be or to have been "real" countries. Communism is dumb, but one can still compare which countries did it better or worse. If the country operates as a going concern, not continually on the verge of total collapse, it can be said to be a competently-implemented, real country, which might be evil or good.
Ignoring Italy (as one does), Germany, Japan, and the Soviets all made significant, independent contributions to the arts and the sciences while providing mostly from their own lands a relatively high level of technological modernity and standard of living for their citizens. North Korea and Cuba have not contributed to human progress, but they do have relatively good modernity and they are self-sufficient like the others above were.
