The "melting pot" metaphor is wrong within the context of diversity. The "melting pot" theory works well if different ethnicities share similar beliefs and value systems. If they don't, then we are witnessing what is happening today in our country. Diversity of ideas are needed in the context of looking for the best solutions for an issue. Diversity of identity is the driver to wreck civilization.
Besides secondary issues, the core principle behind the conservative's beliefs and value system is individual liberty and freedom. Regardless of your ideological stand, if you don't believe in the most important principle, you should move to other countries, especially the commie ones, and find out how important it is. Humans, by nature, are born to be free, not to be chained to anything. Of course, we need to have established social norms to restrain our instincts.
Regarding the reasons why there are differences between conservative and liberal. You can associate each political leaning due to an individual's personality traits. Look up the 5-factor model, and you can see why an individual tends to lean one way or another. For example, conservatives tend to score high on the consciousness factor with openness for liberals. However, the environmental factor will play a role as you mature with age, wiser, additional life experiences; you tend to change your worldview of being more conservative in the secondary issues. However, if you never believe the core principle of being free, then it does not matter.
The reason I said all this because I used to live in a commie country. I know how important individual liberty and freedom mean to my family and me. I will fight to my last breath, not to have them taken away.
