Before the election, the Republican party could have caused the utter destruction of the Democratic party. However, they instead chose to commit suicide. The reason why? There was never such a thing as the Republican party. It was always only the Establishment vs Trump.
I think they know that if he was assassinated it would instigate a great civil crisis with their necks on the line. They would turn him into a martyr and they really do not want that.
