But that's not the advantage of tariffs completely. In execution, and not theory, yes it will make a similar product created domestically "cheaper", but it also can market the domestic labor force for a importing manufacturer to create the same product domestically, creating jobs, providing the product at a competitive price and generating tax money for the state.
Thailand is a wonderful example in this as they have huge tariffs for imports and low unemployment (pre-covid) because companies will produce a performing product domestically. ie. Harley-Davidson builds a few models in country and they are priced more inline with US prices instead of 2 or 3 times as much for the ones imported from the US.
Free trade is joke that will kill our country, because it only works when EVERY state does it, the founders figured this out a couple decades into the country. I'm still unsure why libertarians still think it will work "it just hasn't been tried correctly yet".
