I took Mandarin for a few years in college. Had a cute teacher who cooked a traditional chinese dinner for me at her house. It was back during an Obama election year and in the class we were talking politics and I tried tobget her to join in and she took on a very submissive position and tone with her eyes down (which was super weird for her as a very friendly teacher) and I was like "you dont like talking about politics?" and she just commented that they couldn't do anything about theirs and had no say in their govt. She seemed super uncomfortable even saying that much.
She really liked America but they took her savings into holding and other arrangements to ensure she would come back or could not leave without great loss. She did tell me that.

I had some strangers make a fake account, make it look like i sent a rape/grab her by the joke and screenshot it and posted it in groups where some other people saved it and sent it to my mom and tried to find my job. Then it was easily exposed as a fake because they shopped a part of it. The post was removed and another was made admitting they shouldnt have allowed it posted (the left mods were in on it). Many people never saw the follow up, and some said they didnt care it was fake and still attacked me.
Didnt have any effect and i gave my mom a heads up. She didnt even look in that inbox until years later.

Best way to ensure you dont just end up as a crazy on the block is to organize neighbors willing to show up in your yard for you to protest the police attempt and stand up. and you do the same for your neighbors. or if not enough people close then maybe organize in online groups of conservative locals.
