I think one of the big things with family is that they expect you not to say they are wrong because they are family.
I know what you mean, although the problem I'm having with mine isn't related to politics, but this sentence is still true. They think just because they're your parents they're immune to criticism and they can continue getting away with their bad behavior. But then when you stand up to them and call them out on their bad behavior, you get attacked and everyone turns on you.

In my experience, it was the other way around - the father was the one causing problems in the home due to his alcoholism. So sometimes the mother (like in your example) is the one causing the problems, and sometimes it's the father. Every situation is different, but they always create toxic homes.
