As someone who was there at the beginning (different username on reddit than here), it was always a political shitshow. BlueBoyBob, the user who set up r/cfb, was a total soyboy leftist. Banned people for wrongspeak all the time.
I regret not doing what I had initially planned and trying to take over r/collegefootball which was a dead sub. We basically had the same idea the same day and I just helped moderate r/cfb for a while instead of splitting the userbase.
I've always thought this explains the difference at its root. If we are all descendant from Africa, it only stands to reason that those of us with ancestors that looked around and thought "fuck this desert bullshit there has to be something better," are smarter than those who accepted their circumstances and never got out.
