My wife's family immigrated from Shanghai to Wyoming in the early 90s because her dad despised communism and loved the American ideal of freedom and capitalism. It's not just Taiwan. Keep in mind that the democracy protests across China and the Tiananmen Square protests happened in 1989.

Correct - families who immigrated prior to China becoming super wealthy (in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s) did so out of respect for the American dream. Unfortunately now that's less common among the temporary college kids driving Lamborghinis.
