I believe you maybe mean the "2+2 = 5" rule. Everyone knows that 2+2 = 4, however under pressure, rather that would be someone holding you or a love one hostage, or their idea of "education" or reconditioning, you will "learn" that because of the state, 2+2 can equal 5, because the policy or the "ideology" belies so.
I do believe that 2+2 = 5 is in the book 1984, however that's my idea of "2+2 = 5" or to the least my interpenetration of it.
So point being, "reddit" [or its marxis user base and communities] belies its "2+2 =5" factor because the state power tells them to [eg: blindly follow whatever the state tells them to do], we know "2+2 = 4" [eg: we think what will happen if we let the state do X, then Y will happen]. Vista added UAC (the annoying popup that would darken most of the screen) in witch yes they began to take security seriously.
To be fair, Vista was A unfortunate cluster fuck and Service Pack 2 fix a lot of issues. And not to ruin your day, but Windows 7 is practically a "Updated" Windows Vista (and even Windows 8 and the server counter parts 2008r2, 12, 12r2, are base on Vista) they are all on the NT 6.0 kernel.
Not to mention the Areo theme, change in hardware requirements, and dropped components of XP (Like the Windows ME boot disk in XP used for DOS program support) really is what made Vista bad. The minimum memory requirement for Vista was incredibly high compared to what was needed to run XP, and further more NT was designed for driver compatibility across versions; this of course did not happen with Vista. And alot of other new stuff like UAC was added to Vista that fucked it over.
Other than that BTW I use Arch. And lets not forget Windows Phone/ Windows CE/ Windows Mobile, Windows Live, MS BOB.
