There is no "nailed it" as there are literally tens of thousands of variations that will get a relatively close match to the spike protein that is being targeted. The configuration space is vastly larger than that, though - so the virus and your immune system will still be playing cat and mouse in the landscape of possible configurations.

These are the factories that read the mRNA and build out the string of amino acids that make the protein.
The vaccine works by putting mRNA strings into little fat bubbles. Your cells randomly pull in these fat bubbles and merge them into their cytoplasm. This releases the mRNA and it builds proteins that look like virus proteins - which the cell then shows on its surface.
This tricks the immune system into thinking that an infection is underway and your immune system goes medieval on any cells showing this protein.

To be fair - the mRNA does not get written to the DNA in the cells that take in the lipid rafts delivering the mRNA. The only way they could run that is if the mRNA codded for a set of proteins that make the reverse transcriptase enzyme. That allows RNA to be written back to DNA. HIV and Herpes have version of this enzyme - which is why they are a class of viruses called "retrovirus". They can be written permanently into the cell.
The mRNA in the lipid rafts for this "vaccine" get taken into the cell - the messenger tag gets recognized by chauffer enzymes and taken to the ribosomes - massive protein factories.
The ribosomes then run the instructions in the mRNA - building out the protein string that makes up the "spike" protein. This is shaped like a receptor and it migrates out to the cell membrane - fusing with it and exposing the active region of the spike protein. The internal region is not coded to do anything - but the outer region looks identical than the primary SARS-COV-2 spike proteins.
Your immune system sees these things and freaks the fuck out. It kills the cell that is expressing the protein - because it assumes its infected. It then gives samples of the surface proteins to special immune system cells that activate and start spitting out antibodies.
Antibodies are little recognizer active shape proteins - that are shaped to fit the shape of the offending receptor - with a big flag attached to the end. If the antibody locks into a virus - it blocks that receptor but also signals the immune system to attack anything with those shapes.
The problem with this whole thing comes from the possibility that the cells expressing these proteins might be recognized in error. That could end up causing auto-immune diseases that are long term.
You could also get events like the clotting issue with Astra-Zeneca. This was caused by the crash of platelet generating cells causing a shortage of platelets followed by a fast recovery of those platelets. The body assumes there are still a viral load when they attack cells or detect a drop in them. The body does not really expect the number of cells expressing a viral protein to be a relative constant. Evolution has tuned these responses to be based on fighting wars of attrition - whereas the mRNA delivery mechanism has a short window where it expresses virus features. THIS is likely the biggest reason for adverse reactions to this type of vaccination.
Your body is expecting a war. Gears up and prepares for war and battle. All it gets though is a small cordon of enemy ( relatively ) who are cleaned up quickly with no continued fight.
