Pretty much, there's a subreddit called r/wallstreetbets. They came to find out that a hedge fund (Melvin Capital) shorted a large portion of their Gamestop shares. When you take a "short" position, you technically sell the stock on borrowed margin, in the hopes that the stock will go down sometime in the future, and you can buy back in at a lower price. It can be very profitable however if the stock INCREASES and goes up in price, the investor will have to cover their shorted position, but instead of buying back in at a lower price and gaining a net profit, they are now at a loss because the stock increased in price. The autists at WSB artificially inflated the price of gamestop, and now this hedge fund has to dish out a ton of money to cover their shorts. So far we know they're at least $3B in the hole*. There has been news that they have closed their position, but most believe this to he fake news. Hope this helped.
