The benefit has been the freeing of people's minds from an oppressive religion. Religions are and always have been a control system to benefit the few at the top. In the west's past, the church and the state have been one and the same and have actively worked against political and scientific progress that improves the people's quality of life at the expense of the church's power.
Not believing magical sky faries control everything allows intelligent people to investigate reality and figure out how it actually works. Religious books written by unintelligent, uneducated peasants thousands of years ago provide no insight to "improve the well being of the masses". There just isn't much left in ancient, contradictory fables that can "improve well being" anymore. Atheism provides motivation to learn and explore while religion does not. It's Allah's will right?
More wars have been fought and people murdered over religion than any other single cause. Atheism doesn't start wars. Religions have been a hindrance on humanity since they were invented. The world will be a much better place when humans stop wasting their time arguing over which of their imaginary friends is the real one.
