Manson was a struggling artist who had made friends with many Hollywood musicians but felt frustrated in his inability to succeed. He saw things he desperately wanted: worldwide respect, stardom and, of course, money, none of which he had.
Manson hoped to start an apocalyptic race war (Helter Skelter) where blacks would kill whites & racist whites and non-racist whites would kill each other off, creating a genocide. Manson & his Family would emerge from the LA desert at the end to rule over the remaining black ppl & save the day.
