The hilarious thing is that democrats have controlled Portland since the beginning. It was the democrats and Albert Pike who segregated the cities. Even named a city "Albina" where many blacks live. Any lynching would have been done by the Democrats. The "white supremacist" of Oregon were always Democrats. One of the big fighters against it was a republican named Jonny Applegate, I believe was his name. Republicans controlled Portland only a few times. You can blame the democrats for generally all of Portlands history. There was never any "muh switch" in Portland. Look up all the govenors, Mayors, and Senate seats from the start of Oregon's history.
The gift of capitalism allows a lot more families to become wealthy. This means more families with power. More families with wealth make world and state or economic domination much harder. (Which is why they team up). In socialist/communist countries, only one family, or "the government" is allowed to be wealthy. This makes it much harder for other families to have a say in economic issues. There will always be an "upper echelon" due to competition and natural law, but having a lot more families in that teir makes it so it's very hard for one family to rule it their way. We need the "Batmans" of society too. Only capitalism provides that.

It's sad watching elderly business owners have to run their small shop by themselves because they cannot afford to hire some highschool kid for $15. (On top of paying 10% payroll taxes on them) Then on top of that, they raise taxes 1-3% every year that cost a small business another $1500 in taxes when they are already struggling. That cash is hard to come by for small business. Especially ones that seasonal.. The government is literally fucking American small business. Wage competition is how America was founded. As you said, wage equality always leads to mediocrity on top of poor customer service because less people are working. You aren't gonna hire people with 0 experience for that wage, thus high school kids and people who got out of prison who want to do that right thing don't get the job.
