After Independence, it was the biggest political issue in the New Nation - EVERYTHING revolved around ending it. The North did end it. The South did not.

The South left the Union because of this fight.
Had the South not left - maybe Lincoln would not have signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was 'THE WAR' itself that gave him those powers.... I hope you know that. As the Confederate states did not fall under Yank control - the Proclamation held legally.

I can agree with you in the position he was put in...
but I think that the Founding Notions, our Highest ideals, simply do not allow for Slavery. In my eyes, - This war was 'an extension' of the Founding. This was the Original Declaration of Independence, BEFORE the Southern Colonies edited slavery out Jeffersons Original draft.
And that the issue was so contentious, for so long, - and without any middle ground - I tend to think of the Civil War as a 'correction' to a Massive 'eons long' WORLD PROBLEM brought on by the POWERFUL ELTIES who would simply not let slavery end.
I add that almost no one had a good reason to defend slavery - apart from legalistic "they are my property" arguments. But should anyone 'own' and 'sell' another person?
