I think he was caught totally off-guard by the levels of corruption & disloyalty & basic lying. When I first saw Pelosi had included the election fraud in the impeachment papers, I too was thinking that this was a golden opportunity to get onto the world stage, onto the media & let them have both barrels. I now think that the Democrats world have expected & prepared for that, so by not taking the bait & focussing on straight clearing the fake impeachment out of the way, he keeps more Reps onside. This allows him to keep all his options open to run for 2024 if he chooses & as you say, the rest will come out at a time & place of Trump's choosing.
