Most good gun ranges will have a rental department where you can try out a variety of guns. Take advantage of that and spend a few weeks testing lots of options.
I might recommend doing some research and then consolidating your options so you can hoard more ammo with fewer calibers. For example, if you and your wife both get 9mm handguns, you can grab a few thousand round of one caliber and it will feed both handguns.
