the virus is dangerous to people with compromised immune systems and if you already have an upper respiratory infection / compromised, if you are that 5% that contracts it, very well you may die. Taxing a body by cutting it open and removing half a liver isn't the best move when it is fighting an infection. you are also an infection risk to the hospital.

The way you calculate the rate is you pick a day, see how many deaths it has, now when are there 2x as many deaths? Do that over time. That is your doubling time. it is 3 days. It assumes nothing.
